Rates for 4Q2026 · Source: IFTA tax matrix

Ohio: the matrix lists 0.4700 up to October 3, 2026 and 0.0001 from October 4, 2026 (a rate change inside the quarter). The rate dropped to 0.0001 for a tax holiday from October 4, 2026 to January 2, 2027. This calculator uses 0.0001, so for miles driven before October 4 edit the rate to 0.4700.

Provisional: IFTA marks these rates as not final until December 4, 2026. Check the matrix before you file.

This is a guide for planning, not a filed return. Rates change every quarter; you can edit any rate. Your IFTA license state may also add rules, fees and interest. Ask your base state or a tax professional before filing.

How the IFTA calculation works

  1. Fleet MPG: total miles ÷ total gallons bought, in all states.
  2. Taxable gallons in each state: miles driven in that state ÷ fleet MPG.
  3. Net taxable gallons: taxable gallons − gallons you bought in that state (you already paid tax on those at the pump).
  4. Tax or credit: net taxable gallons × that state's rate. A negative number is a credit.
  5. Add every state. The total is what you owe or what you get back on the return.

With the example rows (Illinois 3,000 miles and 450 gallons, Indiana 1,500 and 230, Ohio 1,200 and 150), fleet MPG is 6.87 and the result is a credit of about $5.38. They are example numbers, not a real return.

Where the rates come from

The rates are the diesel rates in the official IFTA tax matrix for the fourth quarter of 2026. IFTA marks them as not final until December 4, 2026, and they change every quarter, so check the matrix before you file. Kentucky and Virginia include their surcharges. Oregon does not appear because it charges heavy trucks by weight and mile instead of IFTA.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the IFTA return?

No. It is a planning tool. You file the return with your base state, which may require a license, its own forms, fees and interest. Ask your base state or a tax professional.

Why do I get a credit in some states and owe in others?

If you buy more fuel in a state than you burn there, you paid more tax there than you owe, so you get a credit. If you burn more than you buy, you owe the difference. The total across states decides the final amount.

Can I change the rates?

Yes. Each row has an editable rate, so you can use the rate on your own base state's quarterly sheet.

Is my data saved?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers. Reloading the page returns to the example rows.
